The best free Minecraft server plugins for most servers in 2026 are LuckPerms (permissions), EssentialsX (homes, teleports, warps), CoreProtect (grief rollback), WorldEdit and WorldGuard (building and protected regions), Chunky (pre-generation) and spark (lag profiling, built into Paper). On a FREAKHOSTING Paper server you install each one from the Plugins page and restart.

Fewer plugins is better. Every plugin uses memory and CPU, and each one is something to update. Install what you need, then add more when players ask for it.

How to install a plugin from the Plugins page

1

Open Plugins

Open your server in the Game Panel and click Plugins. The Browse tab is open.
2

Search

Type the plugin name in Search plugins. The Minecraft version filter is set to your server’s version. If a plugin is missing, try another Source: Modrinth, Hangar, SpigotMC or CurseForge.

3

Install a version

Click the plugin. Under Versions for this server, click Install next to the version you want.

4

Restart

You see Restart the server to load it. Restart the server. Avoid /reload: it can break plugins.
Manage installed plugins on the Installed tab: Check for updates, a toggle to enable or disable, and a bin icon to delete. See the full plugin install guide.
Read the description before you install. Some search results are client mods, not server plugins. They do nothing on your server.

How to keep plugins up to date

Outdated plugins are a common cause of errors after a Minecraft update.
  1. Open Plugins > Installed and click Check for updates.
  2. For each update, open the plugin on Browse and install the newer version. It replaces the old one.
  3. Restart the server and check the console for errors.
Before a big Minecraft update, make a backup and check that your key plugins already support the new version.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best plugins for a survival SMP?

A typical SMP uses LuckPerms, EssentialsX, GriefPrevention and CoreProtect. Add Chunky to pre-generate the world and BlueMap for a web map.

Do I need Vault?

Only if another plugin asks for it. Vault connects economy and permission plugins, so many shop, rank and job plugins list it as a requirement.

Are premium plugins better?

Not necessarily. The plugins on this page are free and widely used. Check that any plugin, free or paid, supports your exact Minecraft version before you install it.

Do plugins work on Fabric or Forge?

No. Plugins need a plugin server such as Paper or Purpur. On a mod loader the sidebar shows Mods instead. See Paper vs Fabric vs Forge.

Why does a plugin say it needs a database?

Plugins such as LuckPerms and CoreProtect can store data in MySQL. See create a MySQL database for plugins.
