ServerGameSettings.json is in the wrong folder or has a JSON mistake, or the server wasn’t restarted. Game rules belong in save-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json.
Quick checks
Why do my host settings reset after a restart?
Every time the server starts, the panel writes your Startup variables intosave-data/Settings/ServerHostSettings.json. Values you typed into that file for name, description, password, ports, player and admin slots, save name, autosaves, listing, preset, FPS, secure mode, debug events, API and RCON are replaced. Change them on the Startup page. The full list is in server settings explained.

How to make your game settings file work
1
Check the location
In the File Manager, the file must be exactly
save-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json. Capital letters matter.2
Empty the preset
On Startup, set Game Settings Preset to empty. Any preset loads its own rules instead of your file.
3
Check the JSON
Every key and text value is in double quotes, numbers use a dot (
1.5), lines inside a block end with a comma except the last, and every { has a matching }. Paste the file into a JSON checker if you aren’t sure.4
Check the key name
Key names must match exactly, for example
TeleportBoundItems or ClanSize. Keys from old guides that the game doesn’t know, such as ServantMissionTimeModifier, do nothing.5
Restart
Restart the server and watch the console until
Startup Completed. Why does a change not affect my existing world?
The panel notes that some settings may not apply after the save file is first created. If a rule still doesn’t change after the checks above, test it on a new world: set a new Save Name on Startup, restart and check. Switch back to your old Save Name afterwards. See reset the world.Frequently asked questions
Should I edit the files in VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets?
No. They hold the official defaults and game updates can replace them. Copy what you need intosave-data/Settings/ instead.
My server won’t start after I edited ServerGameSettings.json. What now?
Open the console and look for an error about the file. Fix the JSON, or rename your file so the server uses the defaults, then start again.Where do I change the clan size?
Insave-data/Settings/ServerGameSettings.json with the ClanSize key. See clan size.
