Controlling Traffic Flow

By default, Euro Truck Simulator 2 servers include a moderate amount of AI-controlled traffic. Depending on your community’s preference, you may wish to increase the density for a realistic “rush hour” challenge or decrease it to allow for smoother convoy movement.

1. Modifying Traffic Levels

The density of AI traffic is controlled by the g_traffic variable. This can be edited in your server_config.sii file located in the root directory.
  • g_traffic 0: Disables all AI traffic (Empty roads).
  • g_traffic 1.0: Standard density (Balanced experience).
  • g_traffic 5.0+: High density (Frequent traffic jams).

2. Performance Implications

AI traffic is synchronized between the server and all connected clients.
  • Higher density (g_traffic 3.0+) significantly increases the synchronization load on the server’s CPU.
  • If your players report “Lag” or “Stuttering AI”, we recommend returning the value to 1.0.
