Creative Control: Journey Mode

Journey Mode is Terraria’s equivalent of a “Creative Mode,” though it requires players to “Research” items before they can be duplicated. While excellent for building-focused communities, it requires specific synchronization between the server difficulty and the client character type.

Activation Requirements

For successful Journey Mode connectivity, two conditions must be met:
  1. Server Setting: The difficulty variable in your serverconfig.txt must be set to 3.
  2. Character Setting: Players must create a “Journey” difficulty character. Note: Standard characters cannot connect to Journey servers, and vice-versa.

TShock Permissions

If you are using TShock, you can control which players have access to specific Journey powers using permissions:
  • tshock.journey.power: Grants overall access to the Journey power menu.
  • tshock.journey.time: Allows players to manipulate the day/night cycle.
  • tshock.journey.weather: Allows players to toggle rain, wind, and thunderstorms.

Progression Note

Journey Mode allows for “Godmode” and infinite item duplication. For standard survival playthroughs, we recommend Expert or Master mode instead, as items in Journey mode have effectively no value once researched.
