World Expansion

Unturned features one of the most active map-making communities on Steam. To use a custom map on your dedicated server, you must follow a specific sequence: telling the server to download the workshop files and then defining the internal map name in your configuration.

1. Identifying the Map

Before configuration, you need two pieces of information from the Steam Workshop:
  • Workshop ID: The 10-digit number in the URL (e.g., 2683620106 for Arid).
  • Internal Map Name: Located in the mod description. This is often different from the Workshop title (e.g., the map “Arid Extended” might just be called Arid internally).

2. Configuration (WorkshopDownloadConfig.json)

  1. Navigate to: /Servers/Default/WorkshopDownloadConfig.json
  2. Add your map’s ID to the File_IDs array:
    {
      "File_IDs": [
        2683620106
      ],
      "Max_Query_Retries": 2
    }

  3. Restart the server. On boot, the console should say: Workshop: Downloaded [ID].

3. Setting the Active Map

Now that the files exist on the server, you must tell Unturned to load them.
  1. Open your Commands.dat file.
  2. Change the map line to the internal name:
    • map Arid
  3. Restart once more.
