Expanding the Horizon: Custom Maps

One of Rust’s greatest strengths is its creative map-making community. From 1:1 recreations of real-world continents to post-apocalyptic alien landscapes, custom maps can breathe new life into a server. These maps often require the RustEdit DLL to handle custom prefabs and complex electrical puzzles.

The RustEdit Extension

Most high-tier custom maps (bought from sites like Lone.Design) require the RustEdit DLL extension.
  1. Download Oxide.Ext.RustEdit.dll (ensure version parity with your server).
  2. Upload this file to your server’s RustDedicated_Data/Managed/ directory.
  3. Note: Without this extension, custom map features like Bradley APC paths or automated electrical puzzles will fail to function.

Deployment (The Level URL Method)

While you can host the .map file locally, we strongly recommend hosting it on a fast CDN like Dropbox or Discord for faster player downloads.
  1. Host the File: Upload your .map file to Dropbox.
  2. Direct Link: Copy the share link and change the ending from dl=0 to dl=1 to force a direct download download.
  3. Panel Config: In your FREAKHOSTING Startup tab, locate the Level URL field.
  4. Input: Paste your modified link. The server will now automatically fetch this map on boot, and clients will download it at high speeds via HTTP.
