The Cycle of Renewal: Wiping

“Wiping” is the fundamental mechanical loop of Rust. By resetting the world, you provide a level playing field for newcomers and clear the map of excessive architectural clutter, which improves overall server performance and framerates (FPS).

Wipe Categories

1. Map Wipe (Soft Reset)

This resets the terrain and deletes all player buildings, stashes, and items. However, players retain their researched Blueprints (BPs).
  • Procedure: Stop the server and delete all files ending in .sav within the /server/{identity}/ folder.

2. Full Wipe (Hard Reset)

This resets everything, including player knowledge. Everyone starts from scratch.
  • Procedure:
    1. Stop the server.
    2. Delete all .sav files.
    3. Delete the player.blueprints.db file in the identity folder.

The Force Wipe Schedule

Independent of your server’s personal schedule, Facepunch (the developer) mandates a “Force Wipe” on the first Thursday of every month at approximately 2:00 PM EST. During this time, the global server binaries are updated, and all map and blueprint data must be reset to maintain compatibility with the new game version.

Marketing the Wipe

“Fresh Wipe” is the most effective phrase in the Rust server browser. We recommend updating your server’s hostname (e.g., FREAKHOSTING PvP [WIPED 1/15]) immediately after performing a reset to attract the maximum number of new connections.
