To use Sons of the Forest console commands, type cheatstick while playing (there is no text box) and press F1 to open the console. On a dedicated server the console only works on a world created in the custom game mode with "GameSetting.Multiplayer.Cheats": true in dedicatedserver.cfg. Commands such as godmode on, additem 485 and season winter then work for the player who types them.

Before you start

  • The cheats setting only applies when the server creates a new world. Your current world stays without cheats.
  • Make a backup in Backups first, so you can return to your current world.

How to enable console commands on a dedicated server

Set Gamemode to custom

Open your server, click Startup and set the Gamemode variable to custom. The field saves when you click away.

Turn on cheats in dedicatedserver.cfg

Click Files, open the serverconfig folder and then dedicatedserver.cfg. In the CustomGameModeSettings block, add:
Click Save Content. If the block already has other settings, separate each line with a comma.

Choose a new save slot

Back on Startup, set Save Slot to a slot you haven’t used yet, for example 0000000002.

Restart the server

Restart the server. It creates a new world with cheats enabled.

Open the console in game

Join the server. While walking around (not in a menu or the inventory), type cheatstick, then press F1. Type a command and press Enter. Press F1 again to close the console.
There is no per-player permission for the console. Everyone who joins a cheats world can open it, so use it on a server you share with people you trust.

Commands affect only the player who types them. No command gives another player items or god mode. Item numbers are on Sons of the Forest item IDs.

Why does cheatstick not work?

  • The world has no cheats. It was created before you turned cheats on, or Gamemode is not custom. Start a new save slot as above.
  • Keyboard layout. The console only reacts to the US keyboard layout. Add English (United States) as a keyboard in Windows and switch to it while you type.
  • You opened a menu. Type cheatstick while walking, not in the inventory or a chat box, and use lower case.

Do console commands work in multiplayer?

Yes, on a world where cheats are on. On a dedicated server that means a custom game mode world with GameSetting.Multiplayer.Cheats set to true when it was created.

Can I turn cheats on for my existing world?

No. The server reads the custom settings only when it creates a world. Keep playing your world without cheats, or start a new save slot.

Is there an admin command to kick players?

Kicking and banning are done from the in-game Players menu by owners, not with console commands. See set up admins.

Do cheat commands affect other players?

No. godmode, additem and the other commands change only the character of the player who types them, and no command gives cheats to someone else.
