Managing the Climate: Seasons

In Sons of the Forest, seasons aren’t just cosmetic. They impact resource availability (frozen lakes in winter), enemy aggression levels, and your character’s survival needs. Proper configuration of season length is vital for ensuring your players have enough time to prepare for the harsh winter months.

Seasonal Durations

Within your server configuration files, you can define how long each cycle lasts.

1. The Season Length Variable

  • Short: Approximately 2-3 in-game days per season. Use this for fast-paced servers.
  • Normal: 3-5 days. The default experience.
  • Long: 10-15 days. Recommended for serious survivalists.
  • Realistic: 90 days. Follows real-world time; winter will last for months.

2. Implementation

Navigate to /userdata/dedicatedservergameplay.json and locate: "GameSetting.V.SeasonLength": "Short" (Replace with your preference).

Resource Strategy

In Spring, salmon spawn in rivers, providing easy food. In Winter, these same rivers often freeze, making fishing impossible. If you set your season length to “Long” or “Realistic,” ensure you advise players to stockpile dry meat and canned goods before the first snow falls.
