Environmental Restoration: Tree Regrowth

By default, deforestation in Sons of the Forest can become permanent if you clear large swaths of land for building. To maintain the island’s lush environment and ensure a steady supply of building materials for the long term, we recommend enabling the Tree Regrowth system.

Configuration Variables

This setting is managed within the Gameplay settings file:
  • Path: /userdata/dedicatedservergameplay.json
  • Variable: "GameSetting.V.TreeRegrowth": true (Set to true to enable).

How It Functions

  • Timing: Trees typically regrow while players are sleeping.
  • Rate: The speed is determined by the TreeRegrowthRate variable. A value of 0.1 represents a 10% chance for a stump to grow back into a tree each night cycle.
  • Proximity: Regrowth will not occur if a player-built structure (like a cabin) is too close to the stump, preventing trees from bursting through your floors.

Kelvin Tip

If you have tree regrowth enabled, instruct Kelvin to “Clear 5-10 meters” around your base rather than “Get Logs” from nearby sources. Large clear-cuts far from your base will eventually grow back, keeping your immediate view clear while preserving the forest’s overall health.
