Yes, terrain regenerates in Enshrouded, but only outside your bases. Digging, mining and building outside a Flame Altar’s area reset after about 30 minutes or when the game or server restarts. Everything inside a Flame Altar’s area stays as you left it. To keep a change, build or dig inside your base, or extend the altar’s area to cover it.

Why does terrain reset outside my base?

Enshrouded’s world is made of voxels (small blocks of terrain you can dig and build). The game only keeps changes for good inside base areas. Outside them, the world returns to its original shape. A Keen Games developer has said this is “partly for technical reasons”, because the game is already demanding on lower-end PCs.

How to keep your terrain changes

  1. Work inside a Flame Altar’s area. Only changes inside the altar’s build area are kept.
  2. Upgrade the altar. Each altar level makes the area bigger, from 40 x 40 x 40 at level 1 up to 160 x 160 x 160 at level 4.
  3. Place another altar. Your world can have up to 16 Flame Altars at Flame level 11. See flame altar limits.

How to restore terrain on your server

Restore terrain outside a base

You don’t need to do anything. Changes outside a base reset by themselves after about 30 minutes, or straight away when you restart the server.

Restore terrain inside a base

Inside a base the game keeps your changes, so you have two choices:
1

Remove the altar (in game)

Interact with the Flame Altar, choose Deactivate Altar and confirm. After the 30-second timer, the area is no longer protected and resets after about 30 minutes or on a restart. Everything you built there resets too, so move your items first.

Or restore a backup (Game Panel)

Open Backups in the Game Panel and restore a backup from before the change. The whole world goes back to that moment. See backups.
Restoring a backup also rolls back every other change in the world since then. Make a fresh backup first so you can come back.

Frequently asked questions

Does the world regenerate in Enshrouded?

Terrain outside bases does. Treasure chests are different: since November 2025 an emptied chest stays empty for a fixed amount of in-game time, even if you reload the world.

Does mined terrain come back?

Yes. Terrain you dig or mine outside your bases returns to its original shape when the area resets.

Will a server restart undo my base?

No. A restart only resets terrain outside Flame Altar areas. Your bases are saved.

Can I turn terrain resets off?

No. There is no server or game setting to keep terrain changes outside bases.
