save-data/Settings/adminlist.txt and log in with adminauth. Then open the console with ~ and type toggleobserve. Type toggleobserve again to switch back to normal play. Only authenticated admins can use it.

Go somewhere safe
Stand somewhere safe, such as inside your castle, before you start. Your character stays where it is while you observe.
