To use a custom seed on your FREAKHOSTING Minecraft server, stop the server, open server.properties in Files, set level-seed to your seed and change level-name to a new folder name, then save and start the server. Minecraft only uses the seed when it creates a new world, so an existing world doesn’t change. Your old world stays in its folder.

What is a Minecraft seed?

A seed is the number (or text) Minecraft uses to generate a world. The same seed on the same Minecraft version gives the same terrain, biomes and structures. Leave level-seed empty and the server picks a random seed.

Before you start

  • Make a backup: Backups > Create backup.
  • Check the version. Seeds are tied to the Minecraft version they were found on. A seed from an older version can give a different world on 26.x. See your version at the top of Version Changer.

How to set a custom seed

The Server Properties page doesn’t have a seed field, so you edit the file.

Stop the server

Open your server in the Game Panel and click Stop.

Open server.properties

Click Files and click server.properties in the main folder.

Set the seed and a new world name

Change these two lines:
Use your own seed after level-seed=. A new level-name makes the server create a fresh world in a new folder instead of loading the old one.

Save and start

Click Save Content, then Start. The server generates the new world from your seed.

Check the seed

In the console, type seed. The server shows the seed of the loaded world.
To go back to the old world later, click Worlds, open Installed and click Set active on it. See how to install a Minecraft map or world.
Want to replace the old world instead of keeping it? Delete the old world folder before you start the server, and keep level-name as it was. Take a backup first.

Where can I find good seeds?

  • From your own game: in a single-player world, type /seed and copy the number.
  • Seed map tools such as Chunkbase show biomes and structures for a seed before you use it. Pick the same Minecraft version as your server.
  • Seed lists from the Minecraft community. Check the version the seed was made for.

Can I create my own seed?

Yes. Type any number or word after level-seed=. Text seeds are turned into a number by Minecraft, so level-seed=freakhosting always gives the same world on the same version.

Why didn’t my seed change the world?

The server loaded an existing world. A seed only applies when a world is created. Use a new level-name, or delete the old world folder, then start again.

Can I change the seed of an existing world?

No. The seed is saved inside the world when it is created. To use a different seed, start a new world.

How do I find the seed of my server’s current world?

Type seed in the console. In game, an operator can type /seed.

Does the seed give the same world on Paper and Vanilla?

Normally yes, on the same Minecraft version. Mods that change world generation, or a modpack, can give a different result.
