Persistence Management: Save Slots

Sons of the Forest allows a single dedicated server instance to manage multiple “Slots” or distinct world campaigns. This is particularly useful for server owners who wish to host a “Hardcore” world on weekdays and a “Creative” world on weekends without deleting any existing player progress.

All world data and player inventories are archived in the following directory:
  • Directory: /userdata/Saves/DedicatedServer/Multiplayer/
  • Folders: Inside, you will see subfolders named with long GUID strings (e.g., 000000001). These correspond directly to your active Save Slot ID.

Switching or Wiping (The Slot Method)

To “Wipe” your server while preserving the old world for the future:
  1. Stop Server: Navigate to your FREAKHOSTING dashboard and shut down the instance.
  2. Modify Startup: Go to the Startup tab.
  3. Change ID: Locate the Save Slot variable.
    • Current: 1
    • New Slot: 2
  4. Boot: Start the server. The engine will see that no folder for “Slot 2” exists and will automatically generate a brand-new island. All new players will wake up at the starting crash site.

Manual Backups

While FREAKHOSTING provides automated infrastructure backups, we strongly recommend manually downloading your /userdata/Saves/ folder to your local PC once a week. Because Sons of the Forest is in Early Access, large game patches can occasionally corrupt the save file’s internal JSON structure.
