To install mods on a FREAKHOSTING Valheim server, open Mods under VALHEIM in the Game Panel, search Thunderstore under Find mods on Thunderstore, click Install, check the dependency list and click Install again, then restart the server. BepInEx, the mod loader, is already on your server. Most mods must also be installed by every player with the same version; server-side mods don’t need that.

How to install a Valheim mod

Open Mods

Open your server in the Game Panel and click Mods under VALHEIM. On your server lists the mods you have.

Find the mod

Under Find mods on Thunderstore, type in Search Valheim mods. Sort by Most downloaded to see popular mods first.

Check and install

Click Install. The dialog shows the mod’s downloads, website, description and dependencies. Dependencies marked “will be installed” are added for you; BepInEx shows “nothing to do: BepInEx is already on your server”. Click Install.

Restart the server

When it says “Restart the server for the mods to load.”, click Done and restart the server.

Mods are programs written by other people. Only install mods you trust, and make a backup before adding mods to a world you care about.

Do players need the mods too?

It depends on the mod. Check its Thunderstore page:
  • Server-side mods (the Server-side category on Thunderstore) run only on the server.
  • Client-side mods run only on each player’s game.
  • Many mods must be on both, with the same version. Players without them may be refused or see errors.
Players install mods on their PC with a mod manager such as r2modman. Console players can’t use mods, so a mod that players need locks them out of a crossplay server.

Each installed mod shows its name, version, an ON badge and its files, for example “1 plugin file, 254 KB”.

Do I need to install BepInEx on my Valheim server?

No. Every FREAKHOSTING Valheim server already runs BepInEx.
