Shared Exploration: Cartography

In Valheim, map data is stored locally for each individual player. If one player sails to the edge of the world, others will still see that area covered in Fog of War. The Cartography Table is a built-in feature that allows players to upload and download discovery data to keep the community map synchronized.

Crafting Requirements

To build a Cartography Table, you will need the following materials and a level 1 Workbench:
  • 10 Bone Fragments (Dropped by Skeletons)
  • 10 Copper
  • 5 Leather Scraps
  • 10 Fine Wood
  • 4 Raspberries

How to Sync Data

The table does not automatically share data in real-time. Players must manually interact with it to exchange information:
  1. Record Discoveries: Interact with the left side of the table (the writing tools). This uploads your personal explored map and markers to the table.
  2. Read Map: Interact with the right side of the table (the large map). This downloads all exploration data currently stored in the table to your personal minimap.

Shared Markers

In addition to the fog of war, the Cartography Table also syncs user-placed map markers. This is the best way to point out boss altars, merchant locations, or distant resource camps to your teammates.
