Modern vs Legacy Virtualization

Boot Mode determines how your server’s hardware (virtualized by QEMU/KVM) initializes the operating system. While most modern distributions work best with UEFI, some legacy applications or specialized operating systems require the traditional BIOS mode.

Changing the Boot Mode

1

Navigate to Options

Log in to the Cloud Portal, select your VPS, and click the Options tab.
2

Open Settings

Inside the Options menu, click on the Settings sub-tab.
3

Toggle Boot Type

Locate the Boot Type dropdown. Select either:
  • BIOS: Legacy mode.
  • UEFI: Modern mode.
4

Save and Reboot

Click Update. You must manually Restart the VPS for the hardware emulation to switch modes.

When to Switch?

Choose UEFI if:

  • You are installing Windows Server 2022 or modern Windows 11 instances.
  • You are using GPT partition tables for disks larger than 2TB.
  • You are running a modern Linux distribution like Ubuntu 22.04+ or AlmaLinux 9.

Choose BIOS if:

  • You are using an older operating system (e.g., Windows Server 2012, Debian 8).
  • You are booting from a specialized legacy repair ISO.
  • Your OS fails to find a bootable device under UEFI mode.

Caution

Changing the Boot Mode on an already installed system will make it unbootable. The OS must be installed specifically for the mode you have selected. Do not switch this setting unless you are preparing to reinstall or are troubleshooting a boot issue.
