Instant Recovery Points

Snapshots are “frozen” versions of your server’s disk at a specific moment in time. Unlike traditional backups, snapshots are designed for quick capture and restoration, making them ideal for backing up your data immediately before performing a major software update or configuration change.

Working with Snapshots

1

Navigate to Storage

In the Cloud Portal, click Manage on your server and open the Storage tab.
2

Create Snapshot

Locate the Snapshots section and click the Create Snapshot button. Give your snapshot a descriptive name (e.g., “Before-PHP8-Upgrade”).
3

Wait for Completion

The system will capture the disk state. This usually takes less than a minute on our high-speed NVMe arrays.

Restoring a Snapshot

If your changes caused an issue, you can revert back to your previous state easily:
  1. In the Storage tab, find your snapshot in the list.
  2. Click the Restore button.
  3. Confirm the action. Warning: This will overwrite all current data on your disk with the data from the snapshot.
  4. The server will reboot and return to the exact state it was in when the snapshot was taken.

Snapshots are stored on the same storage cluster as your active server for speed. Backups are stored on separate, redundant hardware for long-term disaster recovery. Always use both for maximum data safety.
Snapshots consume a portion of your account’s snapshot allowance. We recommend deleting old snapshots once you have verified that your system updates are stable.

Pro Tip

Always shut down the VPS before taking a snapshot if you want to ensure the highest possible data consistency for databases and active memory processes.
