The Websites list

Click Websites in the sidebar, or go to web.freakhosting.com/websites. The page is called Manage websites.
  • Use All statuses to filter, and the magnifying glass to search.
  • Subdomains appear in the list with a SUBDOMAIN label.
  • Click a domain to open the website’s page.
  • Click ⋮ at the end of a row for Manage, Disable and Delete.

Add a website

How many websites you can add depends on your plan. You can see your limit at the top of the form.
1

Click Add website

On the Websites list or on Home, click Add website.
2

Check your plan

The box at the top right shows which plan the website goes on and how many websites you’ve used, for example 1 of 1 websites used. If you’ve used them all, the Add button stays greyed out. You can upgrade your plan or delete a website you no longer need.
3

Choose how to start

  • Start from scratch: an empty website you fill yourself.
  • Install an app: a website with an app such as WordPress already installed.
  • Deploy from GitHub: a website built from code in a GitHub repository.
Add website form with a plan selector showing 1 of 1 websites used, choices Start from scratch, Install an app and Deploy from GitHub, a Server group drop-down and a Domain field starting with www.

Adding a website

4

Pick a server group

Choose the location where your website should be hosted.
5

Enter your domain

Type your domain name, for example yourdomain.com.
6

Click Add

Your new website appears in the list. Next, point your domain to us and turn on HTTPS.
Want a second address on the same website, such as blog.yourdomain.com? Add a subdomain instead of a new website.

Deploy from GitHub

Deploy from GitHub builds a website from a GitHub repository, with optional automatic deployment when you push changes. It uses the GitHub account you connect under GitHub connection in the sidebar.

GitHub connection

1

Connect GitHub once

In the sidebar, click GitHub connection → Connect GitHub. GitHub asks you to sign in and approve a small app for your account. You choose which repositories it can see, and you can disconnect it at any time.
2

Choose Deploy from GitHub

On Add website, choose Deploy from GitHub, then pick the repository and the branch or tag to deploy. For an existing website, use its GitHub tab instead.
3

Add build settings if your project needs them

If your project needs building (for example npm run build), enter the build command. If the finished site is in a sub-folder (such as dist or public), set it as the publish folder.
4

Turn on auto deploy (optional)

With auto deploy on, every push to the chosen branch or tag deploys the new version automatically. Otherwise you deploy by hand when you’re ready.
How deployments work:
  • Each deployment is saved in its own folder inside deploys in your home directory. deploys/current always points to the latest successful one.
  • A deployment only counts as successful if the code downloads and your build command (if any) finishes without an error. If it fails, your website keeps running the previous version.
  • After a successful deployment, any worker processes restart automatically.
GitHub deployment isn’t available on a website that already has an app (such as WordPress) installed. Its GitHub tab says GitHub deployment unavailable. Remove the app from the Apps tab first, or deploy to a new website.

Restart your website

If your website is stuck or a change hasn’t taken effect, restart its container (the environment your website runs in).
1

Open your website

Go to Websites and click your website.
2

Click Restart container

It’s in Quick links.
3

Confirm

Read the warning and click Restart.
Restart website container dialog warning that all current processes including SSH sessions will be terminated and the website will be briefly offline, with Close and Restart buttons

Restart confirmation

You’ll see Restarting website container, then Container successfully restarted a few seconds later. Your website is offline for those few seconds, and any open SSH sessions are closed.

Download a copy of your website

On your website’s page, open Download in Quick links and choose:
  • Download website data: your files and databases.
  • Download email data: your mailboxes.
The download starts straight away in your browser. It can be large, so make sure you have space on your computer. To put a downloaded copy back, see Upload a backup file.

Disable a website

Disabling takes a website offline without deleting anything. Its files, databases and email accounts stay, but nobody can reach them until you turn it back on.
1

Choose Disable

On the Websites list, click ⋮ on the website’s row and choose Disable.
2

Confirm

The message explains that the website and all associated email accounts will be inaccessible. Click Disable. You’ll see example.com disabled and a DISABLED badge on the row.
Disable test.com dialog saying the website and all associated email accounts will be inaccessible and that it can be enabled at any point, with Close and Disable buttons

Disabling a website

While it’s disabled, visitors see a 404 Not Found page and email for the domain doesn’t work. To turn it back on, click ⋮ → Enable on the same row and confirm. The website works again within a few seconds.

Delete a website

Deleting a website removes it and its content from your account. Download a copy first if you might need anything.
On the Websites list, click ⋮ on the website’s row and choose Delete. You can also delete from the ⋮ menu on the website card on the website’s own page.

Troubleshooting

You’ve used all the websites your plan includes, or a required field (such as Domain) is empty. Check the counter at the top of the form, then delete a website or upgrade your plan.
The preview picture hasn’t been taken yet, often because the domain doesn’t point to us. Click the refresh icon in the corner of the preview once your nameservers are set.
GitHub deployment can’t be configured on a website that already has an app installed. Remove the app from the Apps tab first, or add a new website with Deploy from GitHub.
